AMC 123 - Brush up For AMC with IDEA MATH 123 ( or more) out of 150 is as simple as 1, 2, 3.
The AMC 10 and 12 are fast approaching - the tests take place on Feb. 12 and Feb. 27, 2008. While the most important thing you should do to prepare is continue to work hard at your studies, IDEA MATH is offering two special sessions designed to help you get ready for the tests.
Each session is split into two three-hour classes: lunch is provided in between classes. Classes combine lectures with problem solving practice, ensuring that students know important tools and techniques used to solve AMC problems while allowing them time to apply those tools to real problems.
At the end of each session, we will give students an original practice AMC exam edited/written by IDEA MATH instructors.

*: We also offers the following options:
A list of anticipated topics for each class is given below. Additionally, in each class we will discuss test-taking strategies, such as timing and which problems to focus on. We will also talk about the new NO-CALCULATOR rule: how it will impact the test and how you can adjust to it. For example, problems which require you to think creatively to make a computation more efficient were excluded from AMC tests while calculators were allowed, but they will appear staring this year. We can teach you how to attack these questions effectively.
Jan. 26 Topics: Algebra, Number Theory, and Combinatorics
Feb. 9 Topics: Geometry and Trigonometry

Frequently Asked Questions back to top
I'm planning on attending both sessions. Will the practice tests I receive at the end be different?
Yes! The first test will have more of an algebra/number theory/combinatorics flavor while the second will focus more on geometry, in accordance with the topics taught that day, but both will resemble an AMC test in overall composition.
Will the sessions be geared toward AMC 10 or AMC 12?
The level of material will be sufficient for students to tackle the AMC 12. However, we believe that students planning to take the AMC 10 will be capable of learning from the class and will find the knowledge useful for the AMC 10. In fact, dealing with tougher material than they may encounter on the test is excellent preparation - just as athletes train at high altitudes to prepare for the contests.
I've already taken several IDEA MATH courses. Is this going to be the same material that I've already learned?
No. Unlike IDEA MATH courses, which go into more detail and more systemic, the curriculum for these brush up courses is designed to be braoder in scope so that students will be exposed to a wider variety of types of problems in shorter time.
So this is like a test prep course from Kaplan...
We hope it's much more than that. While in the short term, taking this class will help you prepare specifically for the AMC test, this course has been designed with more in mind. Ultimately, we hope that tackling tough problem through your preparations will help you become a better thinker - more adaptable to novel problems and more confident about new challenges.
A high score on the AMC test opens the door to a broader world, not only because many top colleges understand the value of the problem-solving mathematics and ask for AMC scores on the application, but also because it will show you how many opportunities there are out there: on the string of AMC exams you are bound to find one that you first think impossible before pushing yourself to new limits, and you will meet an incredibly talented and diverse peer group along the way. The AMC is a door to future academic success. If you want to walk through it, we at IDEA MATH can point you to the right direction and accompany you along the journey.
Please contact us (email to amc123@ideamath.org or call (603)772-2336) if you have any questions regarding application.
